Press & Reviews
Born in Greenock, George spent his formative years in Port Glasgow overlooking the Scott Lithgow ship yards and Tate & Lyle warehouses. With a family heritage firmly rooted in Scottish variety theatre he moved at the age of 7 to the seaside town of Ayr. Music was always part of everyday life and it was inevitable that music would play a significant part in his future. Now, with over 37 years of experience in the industry this bold transition into self awareness has produced a new raw and honest originality, allowing his new found voice to articulate rich descriptive narratives and melodies that connect with the past and the romance of days gone by.
I spoke last week with a brilliant Ayrshire based music talent George Payling, one of the best songwriters I’ve heard to sprout from these fertile plains. His music will be released at the end of April/May and I’m lucky enough to have had a preview of the record from the man himself. His work and songs 'Down the Watter' and 'The Fisherman' are mini masterpieces showing deft song-writing ability, a keen eye for melody and a killer hook. It’s the creatives song-writing that really shines brightest on recordings, always the most important thing.
I hear a lot of material which might be glossy in terms of production but with little in the way of depth but this guy is the real deal. It’s no stretch of the imagination to see that this songwriter would and should be a success on the Scottish circuit.
